Dr. Anjani Kumar assumed charge as Director (Technical) Projects & Planning, Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) on 28thSeptember 2026. A distinguished mining professional with over 33 years of experience in Coal India Limited (CIL), Dr. Kumar has extensive experience across mining operations, project planning, vigilance, contracts and corporate management. He holds a B.Tech. in Mining Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy(Ph.D.) in Environmental Science from IIT (ISM), Dhanbad. He is also a holder of the FirstClass Mines Manager’s Certificate of Competency issued by DGMS and Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Human Resources (HR) from Sikkim Manipal University (SMU). He has further strengthened his professional expertise with an Executive Diploma in Project Management from the International Institute of Program and Project Management. Dr. Kumar is a Life Member of the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI) and the Indian Mines Managers’ Association (IMMA). Dr. Kumar commenced his professional journey with Coal India Limited in April, 1993 and served in various field and corporate capacities at Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), including as Technical Secretary to the CMD. He subsequently served as Head of the Projects & Planning Department at Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL). Prior to joining WCL, he served as Executive Director (Contracts), CIL Headquarters, Kolkata, from October, 2025. With his extensive technical, operational and managerial experience, Dr. Kumar brings strong leadership, strategic insight and a result-oriented approach to his new role at WCL. His experience is expected to contribute significantly to technical operations, project development, production planning and execution of key mining initiatives.
