Western Coalfields Limited (Mini Ratna, Category-I company) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Coal India Limited (Maharatna enterprise) under the Ministry of Coal, Government of India.
Western Coalfields Limited came into existence on 1st November, 1975, having its Headquarter at Nagpur in Maharashtra. It operates primarily to produce coal with due regard to social and environmental sustainability. At present, there are 52 producing mines viz 19 Underground and 33 Opencast Mines. It is marketing coal with a strong customer base comprising Power, Cement, Steel, Chemicals, Fertilizers, Paper, Brick Kilns, etc., in Central, Western, and Southern parts of India.
Operational Areas:
Western Coalfields Limited operates in Maharashtra and south-west Madhya Pradesh, covering several prominent coalfields such as Wardha Valley, Kamptee Series, Umrer Bander, Pench-Kanhan, and Pathakhera. For effective administrative control and operations, the mines have been grouped into 10 (Ten) Areas. As of 1st April 2024, WCL has 52 operational mines (19 UG and 33 OC mines):
